The Wipeout-Proof Checklist

7 things every surf suit must pass before you buy — regardless of brand. Check these off as you shop.

Pop-up test: does it stay put?
Stand, bend forward, simulate a pop-up motion. Tops should stay in place; bottoms shouldn't shift. If anything moves in a dressing room, it'll fail in a wave.
Stretch recovery — no sag or sag
Pull the fabric and release. Quality recycled nylon (ECONYL®, REPREVE®) snaps back immediately. Cheap fabric sags, loses shape, and goes sheer when wet.
No hardware where you lie on the board
Rings, clasps, or buckles on the front or hips will dig into you every time you paddle. Check for smooth lining over any closures.
Adjustable straps or tie backs
Wave size changes how much your suit gets yanked around. Adjustable straps let you cinch down for bigger days and loosen up when it's small.
Wet test (or wet-equivalent fabric check)
Ask if the fabric is certified UPF 50+ and opaque when wet. ECONYL® and REPREVE® fabrics maintain opacity. Fast fashion fabrics often don't — you won't know until you're in the water.
Salt + UV resistance certification
Look for GRS (Global Recycled Standard) or OEKO-TEX certification. These ensure the fabric holds color and structure through a full season of salt, sun, and repeated washing.
Flat-locked or covered seams
Exposed seam edges cause rash and chafing on the inner thighs and underarms during long sessions. Run your finger along all seams before buying.

$5
donated to women's empowerment
A portion of every purchase goes to the Women's Global Empowerment Fund and the Lāhui Foundation — women supporting women, globally.
